Back in 2010—long before the era of drones—I captured these images of El Morro while flying a rented Cessna 172 from North Shore Aviation at Isla Grande Airport. These were taken with my trusty Nikon D90, framing one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic landmarks from the sky.


El Morro, officially known as Castillo San Felipe del Morro, has stood guard over the entrance to San Juan Bay since the 1500s. For centuries, its walls protected the city from pirates, invaders, and rival empires. Today, it remains a symbol of Puerto Rico’s resilience, history, and unmatched beauty.


Seeing Old San Juan’s colorful streets and the fortress rising from the coastline from this perspective was unforgettable—a timeless reminder of how history and modern life intertwine on this island.
