Sky Coffee Miami: Sipping Coffee at 30,000 Feet—Without Leaving the Ground

This weekend, I embarked on a unique journey, taking the Brightline to Miami to experience Sky Coffee, an aviation-themed café that's been generating quite a buzz. Nestled in the heart of Brickell, this coffee shop offers more than just a caffeine fix—it provides an immersive experience that transports you into the skies.

The Aircraft and Its Origins

Sky Coffee is uniquely housed within the fuselage of a retired McDonnell Douglas MD-88 aircraft. This particular jet served with Delta Air Lines from 1990 until its retirement in 2019. The owner, Rosana Bentos, acquired the aircraft from a former Delta pilot based in Leesburg, Florida. The fuselage was meticulously transported and reassembled in Miami, transforming it into the café's distinctive setting.

The Inspiration Behind the Theme

Rosana's inspiration for Sky Coffee stems from her childhood dream of becoming a flight attendant in her native Uruguay—a dream she couldn't pursue due to height restrictions. Determined to bring her passion for aviation to life, she invested in this aircraft, even selling her house to fund the project, and transformed it into a café that reflects her love for the skies. axios.com

The Sky Coffee Experience

From the moment you approach Sky Coffee, the aviation theme is evident. A metal detector at the entrance sets the tone, leading you up stairs that usher you into the aircraft's cabin. Inside, the original galley and cockpit have been preserved, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the plane's operational days. The seating area features reupholstered first-class and economy seats from the original aircraft, allowing guests to relax in authentic airline fashion. However, due to regulations, dining inside the cabin isn't permitted; instead, guests can enjoy their orders in the outdoor seating area adjacent to the plane.
