There’s something wonderfully limiting about heading out with just one lens.
Today I took the 85mm downtown to Lake Eola with no particular assignment, no checklist of photographs I needed to come home with, and really no plan beyond spending a Sunday afternoon walking around the lake and enjoying the Farmers Market.
Of course, August in Orlando had plans of its own.
The morning weather was unsettled enough to delay the opening of the market until noon, and by afternoon the familiar Florida combination of heat, humidity, sunshine and increasingly suspicious-looking clouds had settled over downtown. It was the sort of day where you enjoy the light while keeping one eye on the sky.
And somehow, that made it even better.
The Farmers Market brought its usual Sunday personality to the edge of the lake—food, local vendors, artists, dogs happily dragging their owners from booth to booth, music, conversations and people simply enjoying downtown Orlando. Lake Eola has always been one of those places where the city seems to slow down just a little.
With an 85mm, though, you experience it differently.
Instead of trying to photograph the entire scene, I found myself looking for the smaller stories inside it: a face in the crowd, someone laughing across a table, a vendor talking with a customer, the swans wandering through their kingdom as if the rest of us were merely visitors, and little moments happening fifty feet away that I probably would have walked right past with a wider lens.
That compression is one of the things I love about the 85. Downtown becomes layers—people, trees, buildings and color stacked together—and ordinary moments suddenly feel a little more intimate.
Then came the rain.
Because this is Orlando in August, after all.
The clouds eventually won, thunder rolled through the area, and the afternoon received its inevitable Florida punctuation mark. But even that feels like part of the character of a summer Sunday at Lake Eola. Sunshine, heat, farmers market, swans, strangers, camera… and somewhere nearby, a thunderstorm waiting for its turn.
No grand photographic expedition today. No exotic destination.
Just an 85mm, Lake Eola, the Farmers Market, and a few hours spent looking for little pieces of Orlando worth remembering.
Sometimes that's more than enough.
